Monroe-Woodbury senior 120-pounder Marco Vespa and Cornwall senior 220-pounder Will Leonard continued their undefeated seasons as all 15 top seeds advanced to the Section 9 Division I semifinals Friday at Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley.

Vespa improved to 38-0 with pins in 14 and 51 seconds. Leonard pinned Jimmy Bucci of Saugerties in 16 seconds in the quarterfinals to improve to 36-0.

Defending champion Minisink Valley advanced 10 wrestlers to the semifinals including top seeds Zack Ryder (106), Jordan Suarez (126), Sean Savacool (138), Nick Albornoz (145) and Adam Fenner (285).

Minisink Valley seventh-grader Zack Ryder made an impressive Section 9 Division I tournament debut.

Ryder (40-3) pinned all three of his opponents, including returning champion Justin Morales of Middletown in 4:30 in the final. He is the first seventh grader to win a section Division I title.

Was pointed out to me that Kevin Dommreis won a Section 9 Division II title as a Millbrook seventh-grader in 2015.

Minisink Valley freshman Sofia Macaluso is the first girl to place in the Section 9 Division I tournament. Macaluso took third at 120 pounds. She went 4-1 in her first section tournament with her only loss coming to eventual champion and teammate Nick Picariello. New Paltz’s Tara Linneman placed fourth in a six-wrestler bracket at 126 pounds in the 2017 Section 9 Division II championships.

Washingtonville has multiple section champions (Andrew Marchese, 99 pounds and Tom Maddox, 132) for the first time since 1991 when Mike Castro, Mark Aquilar and Rich Gomez took first. Castro won Washingtonville’s only state title that year.

Newburgh Free Academy senior Tyler Serafini, now a two-time champion, leads the section with 48 wins heading into the state tournament. Valley Central’s Cody Ruggirello holds the section record with 55 wins in the 2009-10 season. Kingston’s Mike McGrath won 52 matches and Newburgh Free Academy’s Taylor Laraia had 50 wins in 2009-10. Ruggirello won 54 matches in 2008-09.

Minisink Valley seventh-grader Zack Ryder recorded his second pin in as many matches, dropping Long Beach’s Jeremiah Echevaria in 4:44 to reach the state Division I 106-pound semifinals.

Ryder (42-3) earns a rematch with second-seeded Chase Liardi of Massapequa in Saturday’s semifinals. Liardi edged Ryder 2-1 at the Eastern States Classic.

Highland senior 132-pounder Matt Malherio is the school’s first state semifinalist since Brad Serini in 2007. Matt Malheiro held off third-seeded Mike O’Brien of Mount Sinai 1-0.

Monroe-Woodbury senior 120-pounder Marco Vespa was defeated by Port Chester’s Ivan Garcia, the sixth seed, 3-2 in double overtime, in the quarterfinals. Garcia escaped in the first 30-second overtime and held down Vespa in the second 30 seconds.

Saugerties senior 99-pounder Colby Amell, who was seeded sixth, did not make weight and will not compete in the tournament.

Minisink Valley seventh-grader Zack Ryder is a state finalist.

Ryder avenged a regular-season loss, defeating Massapequa’s Chase Liardi, the second seed, 5-2 in the 106-pound semifinals. He scored the match’s first takedown 33 seconds in and cradled Liardi in the final seconds of the second period for two more points.

“My strategy was to just go at him right away, get the first takedown and secure the match,” Ryder said. “When I locked up the cradle, I knew I had to finish it to get the two (points) so I went to my hip rolled over and got the two. It feels awesome. It’s what I worked for.”

Cornwall senior Will Leonard advanced to his first state final and the school’s first since Paul Paquin in 1997. Leonard edged Roosevelt’s Deaquan Stuart 2-1 in the Division I 220-pound semifinal. Stuart was banged for a stall penalty with 13 seconds left. Leonard takes a 41-0 record into the final. He will clash with second-seeded Lucas Scott of Chenango Forks.
